What is the Reiss Profile?
The Reiss Profile is a diagnostic tool that provides insight into the identity of an individual. It reveals how they are motivated, what’s important to them and what they really value and want from life. In short, the Reiss Profile helps to people understand who they are.
What are the areas of application?
The Reiss Profile can be applied in various settings of development. Here are some examples for a business context:
Value Alignment
What values do the company’s management, customers and shareholders follow? Is the company value statement in alignment with the values of its employees? What vision and mission can be developed considering the values of the individuals?
People Leadership
What are the motives of the leader and of his/her people? What does this mean for a leadership approach that considers both the personality of the leader and his/her people?
Team Development
What is a meaningful purpose of a team. What are its performance goals and agreed ways of working together to which team members are really committed? How can a team develop towards high performance?
Conflict Resolution
Disagreements often run deeper that just behaviour differences. What is really causing conflict between colleagues or leaders and subordinates? Is it we just don’t really understand the other person or indeed ourselves? How can we reveal blind spots and achieve a sustainable resolution of a conflict?
Development of Individuals
Understand what you really want and need from your career! Focus on what you want! Explore the options that take you in the right direction for you. Understand more clearly why certain careers haven’t satisfied in the past and explore your future options with greater self awareness and confidence.
Candidate Selection
How well do the motives of the candidates your are considering fit to the job profile?
Using the Reiss Profiles of the involved parties in any of these sorts of situations builds the basis for greater understanding and authentic development. Who is using the Reiss Profile?
The Reiss Profile is used in small and medium sized companies as well as in multi national corporations (e.g. Starbucks). It can be used in companies of all industries, all sizes and stages of business and in all hierarchical levels. Already well established in Germany, the Reiss Profile was successfully used by the German World Cup winning national handball team in 2007.
What makes the Reiss Profile so unique?
Global applicability
Prof. Dr. Steven Reiss, Ohio State University, USA, asked thousands of people of diverse origin, different ages and stages in life to rate how important basic motives were in determining their behaviour. Based on the findings he developed an on-line self-report test called the Reiss Profile, which is globally applicable for all individuals.
Accuracy and reliability
The validity of the Reiss Profile has been proved by numerous studies, published in distinguished journals. The reliability of the test reaches a very high probability of accuracy at greater than 80%. In addition, deliberately attempting to manipulate the test towards a ‘desired’ outcome is nearly impossible, with a less than 3% chance of being able to do so.
Focuses on the core of personality
The Reiss Profile directly aims at understanding the core of a person’s personality. As a result it provides a reliable basis to understand and predict all other outer levels, i.e. beliefs and skills / knowledge, and in turn behaviour and the ideal environment.

An individualised profile, not a pigeonhole
The Reiss Profile does not pigeonhole a person into a type. Rather it embraces the diversity of human personality and creates a personalised image of life motives and values. The Reiss Profile allows for 6,000,000,000 different combinations and recognises everyone is unique and a not a stereo type.
