Motivate your team today!
Would you like your team to be more motivated and performing the best it can? Below are some tips to achieve it!
In times like these what makes the difference that makes the difference it’s how motivated people are.
We are constantly hearing about redundancies and problems in the economy, in the mean time we need to keep ourselves afloat and motivate the people we still have in our team. It is difficult to motivate in times of uncertainty. People are afraid of their security and safety, there aren’t enough resources, there is higher stress, and too much work. I don’t know how many times I have heard lately “I complain about my job, but what would I do without it?”
So people are de-motivated, hearing bad news and afraid for their jobs, and we need to perform much better than we have ever done. It is a new terrain! We need a new map!
So what makes the difference? It’s effective communication and clarity of purpose.
As a team leader it’s critical that everyone in the team is working together to achieve a common goal.
What are the common obstacles to success: Lack of clarity, conflict due to personality issues, miscommunication, uncertainty, stress, the sum of its parts is less than the individual parts. The good news is that higher motivation and better results can be achieved, however you need to take a different approach. If you do what you have always done, you’ll do what you have always done.
So if you want to motivate your team here are a few tips:
1) Create an environment of trust, by honest communication. If people don’t trust each other how can they put the team’s needs above their own personal needs and wants.
2) Take the time to create a common vision and goals, and make it meaningful. As a team how are you making a difference? Why is it important for you to achieve these goals?
3) Value difference. A great team is composed of different personalities, which add variety and different perspectives to the challenges we are facing. We all gather and process information differently. Understanding those differences and leveraging them can make an enormous difference to the performance of the team
4) Ensure people are equipped to handle difficult conversation and resolve conflict. Conflict is a natural part of healthy relationships, if they are done with respect and they are resolved effectively. People usually shy away from conflict because they don’t know how to handle it. Many times is necessary to ensure results are achieved, and accountability is sustained.
5) Make sure that commitments are firmly agreed and people are held accountable for their results. Many times we think people have committed to something, but we haven’t heard that they are not ready to commit. So clarity in communication is crucial to know when people are not committing and when they are.
I hope you find these tips useful.
Sometimes a team coach or facilitator makes this process easier.
