LEADING PUBLIC SECTOR CONSULTANCY BOOSTS SKILLS THROUGH TRAINING AND COACHING SUPPORT
Coaching and leadership development specialist Inspiring Potential has helped public sector consultancy RSe Consulting to enhance the level of service it provides for clients by developing the management, communication and teamwork skills of its staff.
Inspiring Potential began by designing and delivering Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) workshops for RSe Consulting’s 32 staff. It then ran training courses on facilitation, presentations skills and people management skills and provided one-to-one executive coaching. It is now providing 360 degree feedback with one-to-one follow-up coaching for the senior management team.
“We wanted to further develop the skills of all of our people, from graduates to directors,” said Sue Spencer, Director of Operations at RSe Consulting. “Inspiring Potential understood our needs and they provided a tailored, intellectually-challenging combination of workshops, modular training courses and executive sessions.”
Inspiring Potential designed the half-day MBTI workshop, which ran four times, each attended by different levels of staff. The workshop introduced the Myers-Briggs model - which classifies people’s natural inclinations around how they think/behave - and the participants identified their own MBTI personality preferences. Facilitated group exercises helped the participants to understand their personality types and the implications of these at work.
“Differences in the Myers-Briggs preferences lead to quite different value structures and communication styles,” said Sue Spencer. “Natural communication barriers can occur between the different styles but this workshop helped us to increase awareness and understanding of these differences. It gave us a common language for our soft skills development and it has helped to foster greater cooperation and teamwork.”
The practicalities of the MBTI preferences were further explained when Inspiring Potential ran a half-day follow-up session for all staff.
“We’re an organisation with a mix of profiles and personality types but this diversity is a useful strength, contributing to greater depth and breadth of team competence,” said Sue Spencer.
The three one-day training courses - on facilitation, presentations skills and people management skills - were designed and delivered for groups of staff who had these training needs identified in their appraisals.
Inspiring Potential also provided six one-to-one coaching sessions for a senior consultant, who was subsequently promoted to a director.
“We’ve worked with executive coaches before but our experience with Inspiring Potential has been much more successful,” said Sue Spencer. “The coaching had a considerable impact on the individual and their work within the organisation. It made all the difference.”
Inspiring Potential is currently collecting 360 degree feedback on each of RSe Consulting’s eight directors. The feedback has been provided by the other directors and by employees within the firm. Inspiring Potential will convey the comments back to each director in a 90-minute, one-to-one session. The company will then design a focused training programme to meet the communication and interpersonal skills needs of the directors and it will support this with one-to-one coaching sessions to help each director address their own key issues or concerns.
“Our directors have seen evidence of the success of Inspiring Potential’s coaching and they have confidence in what can be achieved,” said Sue Spencer. “There is a very good fit between their coaches and our people.”
Sue Spencer says the learning initiatives provided by Inspiring Potential will enable RSe Consulting to be more effective in helping public sector organisations achieve and maintain excellence.
“The development so far has helped to improve the skills of our people,” she said. “Two of our characteristics of excellence are high energy and internal trust. Inspiring Potential has helped us to achieve these internally. As a company, they not only provide very good training but they also provide extremely effective coaching support. The additional work with our directors will further enhance our capability and it will enable us to provide an even better service to our clients.”
