Business Professional Life Coaching
Business professional life coaching is for employees who are not operating at their best, as a result of unresolved issues either at home or work.
Some people like to think that they can easily compartmentalise their professional and personal lives. They often talk about how that don't ‘bring their work home with them' whether it's in their heads or in their briefcases. In reality this is actually very difficult to do, particularly when stressful situations arise. After all it is not uncommon for people to come home grumpy or unhappy because of some conflict or stress at work. This can then have an adverse affect on their relationships with their spouses or kids. The reverse can also apply in that employees who may be experiencing some stressful situation at home, will find it difficult to fully engage at work.
For these reasons companies often turn to business professional life coaching to help their employees to handle their situation differently and regain a sense of mental and emotional well being at work.
What does Business Professional Life Coaching cover?
A trained coach will usually be hired by a HR department of an organisation (or often directly by a senior executive). The coach will be required to work confidentially with an employee who may be suffering from stress or low self confidence and this in turn is affecting their performance at work. In some cases the person may exhibit this in behaviour which has a direct effect on fellow employees (e.g. harassment or bullying). The coach will work with the employee over a number of sessions (usually 6-12) in order to determine the root cause of their unhappiness. This requires a good deal of trust and rapport between the employee and the coach. These conversations would usually be difficult for the employee to have with a boss or a colleague for fear of being vulnerable. Business professional life coaching will be a welcome opportunity for the employee to get things off their chest. The coach will help the employee to explore ways to address the cause (e.g. by having an important conversation with their partner, or confront a growing debt problem) and or the symptom (e.g. changing their behaviour so that they react to their situation in a more empowering way). The approach is very solutions focussed which greatly enhances the chances that the employees situation will improve.
How does the company benefit?
The company can benefit by having a rejuvenated, enthusiastic member of staff back in full form, or in many cases in better form than they have ever been. It is rather similar to a valuable footballer returning to first team action after an injury lay off. Sadly many good employees leave their jobs because they cannot cope owing to their inability to cope with the mental and emotional pressures they are feeling. The company then has to go through the time and cost of hiring a new employee which can lead to a fall off in productivity. A further benefit when a company is seen to invest in a member of staff is that it breeds great loyalty and sends a very positive signal to other employees.
